Thoughts about the Wall Street Journal Article "Darkness too Visible"
I was just sitting on my laptop, tweeting on twitter away when I kept seeing #yasaves or @wsj with people sharing their thoughts. I finally go investigate on what this is about and come across this ludicrous article in the Wall Street Journal called "Darkness Too Visible ". My first thought was you've got to be kidding me. First of all, how would YOU know that this how teens feel? How is reading a book that is "disturbing" and "gritty" going to make me less "tenderhearted". Screw that! I'm a typical and modern teenager living in the U.S. surrounded by other typical teens. For now and for a while, teens are going to be my peers. And I would like to assure the writer of this article, that these so called "disturbing" books aren't twisting our minds. I think it is making us more sympathetic and being world aware. I know that's what YA has done for me.
I'm young enough that YA has always been around ever since I was born. But some of the bloggers and authors I've seen share their thoughts didn't have YA growing up. I think that is a big shame...
The authors and books that surround us today are amazing and so well written, no matter what the topic, these YA books can reach into the heart any modern day teen.
In middle school, one of the darkest books I read was By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Ann Peters. Now that book was something I have never read before. Suicide, self mutilation, sexual harassment... Ya it was definitely different. But I am so glad I read it. It made me appreciate the life I have now. One of my close friends was going through a really tough period in her life and by reading this, I was able to thwart some of the dangerous ideas that went through my friend's head. And I wasn't just one of those friends who merely attacked her feelings by telling her what she was doing was stupid. By reading that book, I sort of understood how she felt and I sympathized for her. Now she is as happy as ever. One of the reasons why I think she was able to get better was by the books she read. She always read these dark books about girls and guys overcoming suicide and horrible personal situations. But I think by reading those books, I'm pretty sure she felt like she wasn't the only one out there. That she wasn't alone. And now when I look at her bookshelf, I pause taking in the weird titles and covers, but then appreciate what they did for my friend.
Now from my personal experience, I have to say I have read a range from the annoyingly happy dappy books to the darkest and grimmest books. But I think reading all these variety of YA literature has really shaped who I am today. I am a huge supporter of LGBT rights and part of the reason why was because of reading those "weirdo" books about gay kids being bullied and getting gas pumps getting shoved down their throats. Part of the reason I am open minded and supportive was reading how these characters felt and then just feeling so overwhelmed with emotions because of how stupid people can just judge and criticize gay kids to the point of even suicide. Imagine if we had all these books in the 70's, 80's, or 90's. Could the older generation been more lenient about the civil rights for the LGBT community? Who knows? Maybe...
YA has also been like a drug to me. I keep saying that I'm a modern teen, so what comes with that? Hell of a lot of peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, and whatever else you could think of. I should probably mention that I also live in one of the THE biggest college party cities, the city of Boulder, Colorado, home of the CU Buffs. So saying that, it's pretty easy for highschoolers to get their hands on those lovely kegs. But me? Ya I go to parties and whatnot but do I get "crunked", which is a popular teen term for partying out of your mind to the point of having a hangover for a week. Haha...definitely not. I just say, "Bitch, I've got some reading to do!" And hey, my friends just say whatever and let me do my thing. So I'd say it works out. I'd also say I'm a pretty social girl so it's not like I completely hide out of the world just to read books. No, definitely not. YA literature has just made it so that I can pass on a night of joint sharing to instead read about super hot Jace Wayland from City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. Clear and simple. So do the "gritty" books about teenage alcoholics affect me into being one? On the contrary!
So the moral of my little rant is, that don't listen to the stupid hum bug that writer of this article has written. YA is bad ass and has risen to the top! YA has shaped me and probably millions of people out there into making better choices and feeling that you aren't alone. Because really, everyone needs a little of that wild teen angst that makes up YA novels. Everyone.
Amen.

May Reviews Sum Up!
Since the last month of school is always hectic, what with finals and such, I didn't get to finish as many books as I'd like! But that aside, I did read some very fine books, my favorites being Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck and Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins. Those books were fantastic and probably the best I read last month. On the other end of the spectrum, I didn't quite like Need by Carrie Jones, but that is the only book that really didn't acquire to my taste out of the rain filled month!
Betrayed by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast
Chosen by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast
Matched by Ally Condie
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
Wither by Lauren DeStefano
What Happened to Goodbye? by Sarah Dessen
The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell
Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon
13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson
Summer and the City by Candace Bushnell
Guardian of the Dead by Karen Healey
Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck
Need by Carrie Jones
Untamed by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast
Happy June!
Book(s) of the Moment: House of Night Craze : Untamed, Hunted, and Tempted by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast
So I had a House of Night craze during which my laptop fell ill to a nasty virus,so I decided to catch up on my Zoey Redbird adventures! But to review, I decided I would make it a little short and easy for me by reviewing all three books that I read in one post! Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy? A little bit... Let's start off by saying that I did NOT like the first book, Marked. I thought it was full of cheese and I never thought I would continue reading the series. Of course my unquenchable thirst of curiosity got the better of me and I just had to find out what happened in the rest of the series. So I gave in and started reading the rest. And boy, am I glad I did!
Life sucks when your friends are pissed at you. Just ask Zoey Redbird – she’s become an expert on suckiness. In one week she has gone from having three boyfriends to having none, and from having a close group of friends who trusted and supported her, to being an outcast. Speaking of friends, the only two Zoey has left are undead and unMarked. And Neferet has declared war on humans, which Zoey knows in her heart is wrong. But will anyone listen to her? Zoey's adventures at vampyre finishing school take a wild and dangerous turn as loyalties are tested, shocking true intentions come to light, and an ancient evil is awakened in PC and Kristin Cast's spellbinding fourth House of Night novel.

I think this book started my craze for House of Night. The first three books were mehhh but reading this made me excited! I loved being surprised by all these new discoveries and happenings! And this book finally places down what Zoey's destiny seems to be! It was awesome and a fun ride to read this!
I give it a 4 out of 5 CHEWS!
The good news: Zoey’s friends have her back again and Stevie Rae and the red fledglings aren’t Neferet’s secrets any longer. The bad news: Ancient evil with the face of an angel has been let loose – that and various other nasties (whose faces aren’t so angelic). Grandma Redbird is in trouble. Heath is in trouble. The House of Night is in trouble. Okay, let’s face it – Zoey’s whole world is in trouble! But when the trouble comes from a being who appears to be beauty personified, will the world believe it? Especially when only a teenager and a group of misfits are the only ones who really understand the danger he brings. Will Zoey have the strength and wisdom to reveal the truth? Especially when, in the House of Night, the truth is often hard to come by...

Once again, this book proves to me how wrong I was to think that just because this first book sucked that means the rest do to. Proved me SO WRONG!
I give it a 5 out of 5 CHEWS
So…you’d think after banishing an immortal being and a fallen High Priestess, saving Stark’s life, biting Heath, getting a headache from Erik, and almost dying, Zoey Redbird would catch a break. Sadly, a break is not in the House of Night school forecast for the High Priestess in training and her gang. Juggling three guys is anything but a stress reliever, especially when one of them is a sexy Warrior who is so into protecting Zoey that he can sense her emotions. Speaking of stress, the dark force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading, and Zoey is beginning to believe Stevie Rae could be responsible for a lot more than a group of misfit red fledglings. Aphrodite’s visions warn Zoey to stay away from Kalona and his dark allure, but they also show that it is Zoey who has the power to stop the evil immortal. Soon it becomes obvious that Zoey has no choice: if she doesn’t go to Kalona he will exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her. Will Zoey have the courage to chance losing her life, her heart, and her soul? Find out in the next spectacular installment in the House of Night Series, Tempted. ~GoodReads
Umm...ya...so...this was freaking amazing! The ending was utterly jaw dropping and I about started hyperventilating! Why do paranormal vampire books ALWAYS get to me?!? Always... It started with Twlight in the 6th grade and look how far I've come! Dork. Oh well. I've also decided I'm going to name my future child, Stark. I kind of fell in love with that name. Ok so ya, I also kind of think that Stark in the book is hot stuff but hey, Stark my future child shall be! Or until then maybe my pet fish. Maybe I'll just get a little red fish and name him Stark in honor of James Stark...
I give it a 5 out of 5 CHEWS!
Anyways it's obvious that I'm flipping out over this book because it was amazeballs so definitely read this series! I can't wait to read Burned and Awakened! So psyched here!
Until then, I shall daydream of my new pet fish, Stark! Oh and the fictional character too...a lot.

Book of the Moment: Need by Carrie Jones
Zara White suspects there's a freaky guy semi-stalking her. She's also obsessed with phobias. And it's true, she hasn't exactly been herself since her stepfather died. But exiling her to shivery Maine to live with her grandmother? That seems a bit extreme. The move is supposed to help her stay sane...but Zara's pretty sure her mom just can't deal with her right now.
She couldn't be more wrong. Turns out the semi-stalker is not a figment of Zara's overactive imagination. In fact, he's still following her, leaving behind an eerie trail of gold dust. There's something not right - not human - in this sleepy Maine town, and all signs point to Zara.
In this creepy, compelling breakout novel, Carrie Jones delivers romance, suspense, and a creature you never thought you'd have to fear.
~ GoodReads Synopsis
I don't really have any exciting bits about this book to share really...It was utterly boring. I swear, it's always a hit and miss with paranormal books and I felt like this book was leaning towards the miss side. Zara is cool when it comes to the fact that she has this while "save the world" type personality but other than that she is quite boring. Her love interest, Nick, though is quite enticing. I mean he is very stereotypical for a "paranormal" being but he is just so adorable! I do however think the twist of having pixies was pretty cool. Pixies and shifters? Cool mix right there. This is a book to read on of those lazy summer days when you want something mildly amusing and easy to read.
I give it a 3 out of 5 CHEWS
Book of the Moment: Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck
Tiger's Curse is the first the captivating Tiger Saga by author, Colleen Houck.
Passion. Fate. Loyalty.
Would you risk it all to change your destiny?
The last thing 17-year old Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year-old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world. But that’s exactly what happened. Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.
Tiger’s Curse is the exciting first volume in an epic fantasy-romance that will leave you breathless and yearning for more
~GoodReads Synopsis
When I first saw this book, I just couldn't get over how the cover looked. On the Internet obviously you can't tell from a picture that when you actually hold it in your hands and look at it, you know it's going to be a good book. It's a looks a little expensive in packaging but this book's cover is probably one of the prettiest I've seen. There are a bunch of little details you wouldn't have seen if you were just looking at the image on the web. But prettiness aside, what did I think of this book?
The first few pages were enthralling, making my already extreme imagination go berserk! The story is captivating and nothing I have heard before! The setting, culture, and roots of this book are Indian and it is just so different and wonderful to read about! I liked the main character Kelsey because while she has that tidbit of teen angst that I can definitely relate with (ha!), she also has a very mature sensibility about the world and life in general. She's not one of those completely stereotypical, annoying brat of a teen that most books make out teens to be, so it's a refresher!
Ren, the lurrrvvve interest, is Indian, hence the whole "Indian Prince becoming cursed into being a tiger and then heroine Kelsey must find a way to reverse it" type thing. I love how this book also has different ethnic romance in it! It's so nice to see two people from different backgrounds come together. We need more racial diversity in literature because readers are from all sorts of backgrounds! Myself included! So I loved reading this book and seeing romance spark between Ren and Kelsey, two completely different people from different cultures and centuries.
This book is such a blast to read and it has humor, action, romance, and adventure! Tiger's Curse is the ultimate book and any sort of reader would love to read this! This book is one of a kind and definietly a good read!
I give it a 5 out of 5 CHEWS!
***This book is also covering the third book I read for the Once Upon a Time Reading challenge in the folklore and mythology department! :)***

Q. What are you doing to prepare for an upcoming zombie apocalypse and/or the return of Mel Gibson to the silver screen? (Both of which could be terrifying.)
What makes you think I'm not a zombie myself? Plus...I'm Mel Gibson. No really. A zombie Mel Gibson getting ready to return to the silver screen. Oh ya. You SHOULD be terrified.
